"While reading The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton, I always keep thinking to myself, “What would it have been like to live during the time of the Gilded Age in America?” and then I remember that only a few hours from New York City, I can get a firsthand experience in Newport, Rhode Island! Synonymous with the Gilded Age, Newport, with its sprawling mansions once owned by the likes of the Vanderbilts and the Astors, reflected a time period in America of huge economic growth and change at the turn of the 20th century – especially favorable to the wealthy. Oh, what it must have been like to attend a ball, concert, or banquet at the Breakers or the Elms, or enjoy tea at the Chinese Tea House on the lawns of Marble House! I remember visiting these homes one summer on a tour and being amazed at all the craftsmanship and attention to detail in them–dazzling objects in gold and jewels frozen in time. I especially loved walking along Bellevue Avenue, imagining how life must have been, and how hot everyone probably was at all those fully attired summer events! Today, these mansions are well taken care of by the Preservation Society of Newport County, providing a lens into this fascinating period and sharing it with all of us.
