Chinese Tea House Loose Leaf Tea: Congou

The Chinese Tea House in Newport, Rhode Island, is a unique architectural gem located on the grounds of the Marble House mansion. Built in 1914 by Alva Vanderbilt, it reflects her fascination with Asian art and culture. Inspired by traditional Chinese design, the tea house hosted social gatherings and events. It remains an iconic symbol of the eclectic tastes and global influences that shaped Newport's Gilded Age society.

Grown in Southern China, Congou is one of the last of its kind, one of the great historical teas of China from its trading days. The word congou refers to a tea made with highest mastery or careful skill to produce thin, tight strips without breaking the leaves. The resulting toasty black tea is smooth and sweet with the flavor of unsweetened baked apples. In the Boston Tea Party, 15 chests of Congou were destroyed.
