About the Author

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Robert Mastin was stationed in Newport in 1972 onboard the USS Joseph Hewes (DE-1078). This was his first duty station after graduation. He was here when the Atlantic Fleet was pulled out of Newport in 1973, and his ship moved to Charleston, South Carolina. He returned to Newport in 1976 for shore duty at the Navel Underwater Systems Center (NUSC), then left the navy in 1978, after five-and-a-half years active duty. He stayed in Newport, operating several local businesses over the years, including a publishing company in the 1990s. His latest business established in 2002, is Custom House Coffee, an award-winning local coffee house in Middletown, Rhode Island. Much of the material in this book came from the many regulars who come into the coffee shop and share their stories about Newport during the Atlantic Fleet era. Mastin collaborated with two employees at the coffeehouse, Kristen Maliszewski and Kaitlin Welch, to establish Newport Nostalgia, LLC, which published this book.
