This ornament features the distinguished front door of the Hunter House, a striking example of Georgian Colonial architecture in Newport. built between 1748 and 1754 by merchant and colonial deputy Jonathan Nicholas Jr., the home reflects the elegance and prosperity of 18th-century Newport.
The house later belonged to Joseph Wanton Jr., a Loyalist merchant, and then to William Hunter, a U.S. Senator and diplomat under President Andrew Jackson. In 1780, it served as the headquarters for Admiral de Ternay, commander of the French fleet during the Revolutionary War.
Throughout its history, the Hunter House was also home to a diverse household that included free and enslaved individuals whose lives and labor were part of the fabric of colonial Newport. Today, the house stands as a National Historic Landmark, preserving the stories of all who lived and worked there.
This ornament celebrates the craftsmanship and layered history of a Newport treasure that continues to inspire reflection and appreciation.
